How to Request a Police Report from the Aurora, IL Police Department

Published

After a collision or incident in Aurora, the Aurora Police Department (APD) maintains its records bureau at 1200 East Indian Trail, Aurora, IL 60505. Below is a procedural walkthrough of how to obtain that report.

Two Ways to Request Your Report

Option 1: In-Person at the Records Bureau

Walk-in hours are generally Monday through Friday during business hours. Call 630-256-5000 to confirm current hours before visiting.

Bring the following:

  • A valid, government-issued photo ID
  • The date, time, and location of the incident
  • The report number, if you received one at the scene
  • Payment for applicable fees (see Fees below)

If the report is on file, you may receive it the same day. If it is still being processed, the clerk will give you an estimated return window.

Option 2: Online or by Written Request

Traffic crash reports filed on the Illinois Uniform Traffic Crash Report form are available through the Illinois State Police crash report lookup at https://idot.illinois.gov once the responding officer has submitted the report.

Non-crash incident reports require a written public-records request under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Submit a FOIA request to APD by:

  • Email — address listed on the City of Aurora's official website at aurora-il.org
  • Mail — FOIA Officer, Aurora Police Department, 1200 East Indian Trail, Aurora, IL 60505
  • In person — at the records bureau counter

APD must respond to a FOIA request within 5 business days; that window may be extended to 10 business days with written notice.

What Identifying Information You Need

Gather as much of the following as possible before submitting your request:

  • Report/case number — provided at the scene
  • Date and approximate time of the incident
  • Street address or intersection where the incident occurred
  • Names of involved parties, if known
  • Your relationship to the incident (involved party, legal representative, insurer, etc.)

Fees

  • Traffic crash reports: typically $5.00 per report
  • Incident/case reports: fees may vary by page count
  • Payment at the counter generally includes cash, check, or money order — call ahead to confirm whether credit cards are accepted

Fees are subject to change. Verify the current schedule by calling 630-256-5000 or visiting aurora-il.org.

Typical Turnaround Time

  • Traffic crash reports: generally available within 5–10 business days of the incident, once the officer submits the report
  • FOIA requests: APD must respond within 5 business days (extendable to 10 with written notice)
  • Reports tied to active investigations may be delayed or released with redactions

If a report is not yet available, ask the records bureau for an estimated availability date.

What a Police Report Typically Contains

An APD crash or incident report generally includes:

  • Date, time, and location of the incident
  • Names and contact information of involved parties and witnesses
  • Driver's license and vehicle information (crash reports)
  • Officer's narrative of observations upon arrival
  • Crash diagram showing vehicle positions (crash reports)
  • Contributing circumstances and any citations issued
  • Case or report number

Body camera footage, supplemental reports, and 911 call audio are separate records and require individual requests.

If Your Request Is Denied or Delayed

A denied FOIA request will include a written reason citing the applicable exemption. To challenge a denial, submit a request for review to the Illinois Attorney General's Public Access Counselor at illinoisattorneygeneral.gov.

For request status questions, contact the APD Records Bureau directly at 630-256-5000.
